HIRSCHMANN

Hirschmann M1-8SFP Switche

The Hirschmann M1-8SFP is a specialized, hot-swappable media module designed for the modular MACH102 and MACH104 series of 19-inch rack-mount industrial switches. This expansion module allows industrial network architects to add up to eight Fast Ethernet SFP fiber optic ports to a single switch slot, providing exceptional density and flexibility for long-distance backbone topologies.

By utilizing hot-swappable Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers, it allows on-the-fly network modifications without shutting down the main switch or disrupting critical operations

Technical Parameter List

The core operating and physical specifications of the M1-8SFP media module are structured below:

Parameter Specification Description
Product Type Media Module Hot-swappable expansion interface for MACH series switches
Model Designation M1-8SFP $8 \times \text{Fast Ethernet SFP slots}$ expansion module
SFP Port Speed $100\text{ Mbit/s}$ Designed for Fast Ethernet SFP optical transceivers
Supported Transceivers M-FAST SFP Series Compatible with MM (Multimode) and SM (Singlemode) SFPs
Interface Connection Modular Backplane Directly slides into designated modular slots
Hot Swapping Yes Can be inserted or removed while the host switch is live
MTBF $> 1,200,000\text{ hours}$ Exceptionally high mean time between failures
Power Consumption Max $8\text{ W}$ Power is drawn directly from the host switch backplane

Product Features & Core Advantages

Extreme Media Flexibility: By supporting generic $100\text{ Mbps}$ SFPs, you can mix and match multimode (for short-distance campus runs) and single-mode (for miles of long-distance connections) transceivers on the same module.

Zero-Downtime Hot Swapping: It can be inserted or extracted from the main rack switch chassis while it is powered on. This ensures maintenance or upgrades on this module never drop traffic on the switch’s other active ports.

High Link Density: Packing 8 SFP slots into a single, compact front-facing module maximizing available port real estate on $1\text{U}$ 19-inch racks.

Seamless Integration: Fully compatible with the advanced management software of the host MACH switch, allowing direct diagnostic monitoring of fiber SFP parameters (like optical TX/RX power levels via DDM/DOM) through the switch’s primary web interface.

Model Classification (M-Series Modules)

The M-series modular ecosystem allows users to configure MACH switches with a customized variety of interfaces:

M1-8SFP (Fast Ethernet SFP): Provides $8\times 100\text{ Mbps}$ SFP slots (this featured model).

M1-8TP-RJ45: Provides $8\times 10/100\text{ Mbps}$ RJ45 twisted-pair copper ports.

M-4-SM-LC / M-4-MM-ST: Legacy modules pre-configured with fixed, onboard single-mode (LC) or multimode (ST) fiber interfaces instead of empty SFP cages.

Environmental Tolerance Conditions

Because it inherits the robust build quality of the Hirschmann OpenRail and MACH families, the module is constructed to survive in rigorous field conditions:

Operating Temperature: $0\text{ °C}$ to $+50\text{ °C}$ (standard indoor control room rack environment).

Storage / Transport Temp: $-25\text{ °C}$ to $+85\text{ °C}$.

Relative Humidity: $10\%$ to $95\%$ non-condensing.

EMC Immunity: Certified to meet high-level substation/industrial EMI protection standards, protecting data lines from electrostatic and high-voltage line spikes.

Installation Method

1.Remove the Blank Cover Plate:Prepare the slot。

Unscrew the captive retaining screws on the host switch’s empty module bay cover and slide out the blank metal faceplate. Keep the slot clean.

2.Align and Slide In the Module:Chassis alignment。

Hold the M1-8SFP module by its integrated handles. Align the module housing with the internal guide rails of the switch bay and push it smoothly inward until the rear connector seats firmly with the host backplane.

3.Fasten Retaining Screws:Secure the module。

Tighten the two front-panel thumb-screws (or use a screwdriver) to firmly secure the module flange to the host switch chassis, establishing a ground path.

4.Populate SFP Transceivers:Fiber connection。

Insert compatible $100\text{ Mbps}$ SFP transceivers into the vacant ports until they click. Remove the SFP dust caps and plug in your LC or SC fiber optic patch cables.

Operating Instructions

Optical Diagnostic Monitoring

Once installed, the module is automatically discovered by the host switch operating system. To monitor optical parameters:

Log into the host MACH switch web interface via HTTPS.

Navigate to Port Configuration $\rightarrow$ SFP Diagnostics.

Here, you can monitor the physical operating state of each SFP port, including laser temperature, transmit/receive optical power ($dBm$), and current supply voltage. This helps predict fiber optic cable degradation before a full connection drop occurs.

LED Status Reference

L/D (Link/Data) LED (Green/Yellow per port):

Off: No physical fiber link detected. Verify SFP insertion and remote device power.

Solid Green: Valid physical link established at $100\text{ Mbps}$.

Flashing Green/Yellow: Active transmission/reception of Ethernet frames.
