Hirschmann MSP30-16040SCZ999HHE2A Datasheet & Technical Guide

The Hirschmann MSP30-16040SCZ999HHE2A (Order Code / Version: MSP30-16040SCZ999HHE2A06.1.02) is a high-density, 3rd-generation PowerMICE (MSP30) Managed Industrial DIN-Rail Switch Base Unit. Engineered by Belden / Hirschmann, it provides a modular backplane housing up to 20 total ports (16 Fast Ethernet ports via hot-swappable MSM media modules + 4 Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports).

Operating on Hirschmann’s HiOS (Layer 2 Advanced) software, it delivers enterprise-grade security, deterministic redundancy, and flexible port customization for mission-critical automation networks.

1. Unique Product Description

The MSP30-16040SCZ999HHE2A serves as the core backplane unit for Hirschmann PowerMICE systems. Designed for fanless DIN-rail mounting, it allows industrial engineers to combine copper RJ45. optical fiber (SC/ST/LC), and Power over Ethernet (PoE+) modules into a single compact housing.

Switching Architecture: Store-and-Forward wired-speed Layer 2 switching.

Port Capacity:

Up to 16 Fast Ethernet ports (10/100 Mbps) via 4 media module slots.

4 Gigabit Ethernet ports (100/1000 Mbps) for high-bandwidth backbones/uplinks.

Operating System: HiOS (Hirschmann Operating System) — Layer 2 Advanced feature set.

Power Supply: Dual redundant 24 V DC inputs (18 V DC to 32 V DC) via 4-pin plug-in terminal blocks.

Auxiliary Interfaces: 1 × RJ45 V.24 serial console port + 1 × USB port for ACA21/ACA22 AutoConfiguration Adapters.

2. Product Advantages and Features

Hot-Swappable MSM Media Modules: Reconfigure or expand port counts (copper, singlemode fiber, multimode fiber) in the field without powering down the switch or interrupting running operations.

Sub-10ms Ring Redundancy: Supports Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP), HIPER-Ring, RSTP (802.1D-2004), and Link Aggregation (LACP) for zero-packet-loss network recovery during cable failure.

Advanced Cyber Security: Features MAC-based port security, IEEE 802.1X access control, RADIUS authentication, Dynamic ARP Inspection, IP Source Guard, and DHCP Snooping to block unauthorized access.

High-Precision Time Synchronization: Integrates PTPv2 (IEEE 1588v2) Boundary and Transparent Clock capabilities alongside SNTP for strict real-time control synchronicity.

Vibration & Shock Proof: Rugged metal housing engineered for harsh industrial vibration (IEC 60068-2-6) and heavy mechanical impact (15 g shock rating).

3. Application Cases

Power Utilities & Substations: Interconnecting remote Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) across high-voltage control stations immune to heavy electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Transportation & Traffic Management: Trackside rail control, highway monitoring, and tunnel infrastructure compliant with NEMA TS2 standards.

Automotive & Machine Building: High-density cabinet networks requiring quick modular adjustments as assembly lines are reconfigured or expanded.

Water & Wastewater Treatment: Central distribution backbone connecting distant pump stations over long-haul fiber links with redundant power feeds.

4. Other Models in the Same Series

The PowerMICE (MSP30 / MSP40) chassis family offers different backplane port densities and software capabilities:

Model Part Number Max FE Ports Max GE Ports Software Level Operating Temp Range
MSP30-16040… (Current) 16 Ports 4 Ports HiOS Layer 2 Advanced 0°C to +60°C
MSP30-24040… 24 Ports 4 Ports HiOS Layer 2 / Layer 3 Advanced 0°C to +60°C
MSP30-28000… 28 Ports 0 Ports HiOS Layer 2 / Layer 3 Advanced 0°C to +60°C
MSP30-EEC… Modular 4 Ports Layer 2 / Layer 3 (Extended Temp) -40°C to +70°C
MSP40 Series Up to 28 GE Full Gigabit / 2.5G / 10G Uplinks 0°C to +60°C / EEC (-40°C to +70°C)

5. Installation and Maintenance

Installation

DIN-Rail Mounting: Clip the chassis onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail (dimensions: 313.8 mm × 147.2 mm × 141.75 mm). Ensure at least 10 cm of vertical clearance above and below for natural convection cooling (fanless chassis).

Grounding: Connect a protective earth (PE) cable to the grounding screw on the housing to meet EN 61000 EMC requirements.

Power Wiring: Connect redundant 24V DC power sources to terminal blocks V1 (+/-) and V2 (+/-).

Media Modules (MSM): Insert desired MSM media modules into open expansion slots and tighten thumb retaining screws.

Maintenance & Diagnostics

Configuration Backup: Insert a Hirschmann ACA21-USB or ACA31 (SD Card) auto-configuration adapter into the front USB slot. System configurations are saved automatically and restored instantly if a unit is swapped.

Software Updates: Upgrade HiOS firmware via HTTP/HTTPS web GUI, SFTP, or SCP.

LED Status Overview:

STAT: Solid Green = Normal operation; Solid Red = Hardware fault.

FAULT: Red = Power supply failure or ring redundancy breakdown.

Port LEDs: Green = Link established; Flashing = Data activity; Off = Link down.
