VM600 slimline rack – 19″ rack with a height of 1U (ABE056)
A VM600 MPS can be housed in a slimline 19 inch rack (84TE) with a height of 1U (1HE),
known as the VM600 slimline rack (ABE056). It is a 19″×1U rack with 1×VME slot in the
front of the rack and 2×slots on the rear. The rack slots are designated slot1 and slotn,
since it can be set to any slot number from slot03to14. SeeFigure2-4.
An example of a MPS housed in an ABE056 rack is shown in Figure2-4.
An ABE056 contains a front card cage and a rear card cage. The card cages are separated
by the rack backplane. Each side of the backplane is equipped with connectors allowing
modules/cards to be quickly and easily installed.
The appearance of the front panel and rear panel of the rack depends entirely on the types
of cards installed in the two card cages. These cards are presented in the following sections
of this chapter.
Slot number coding for cards in the rear of a VM600 slimline rack
Most cards installed in the rear of a VM600 slimline rack (ABE056) use an electronic keying
mechanism to help ensure that the card is installed in the correct slot (for example, in the slot
directly behind the associated processing card in the front of the rack). See also 2.1.1.1Slot
number coding for cards in the rear of a VM600 system rack.
For VM600 slimline racks (ABE056), the rack’s slot number is configurable by DIP switch and
slot number coding requires that the rack’s slot number matches the slot number used by the
card.
As a result, a VM600 card can only be used in a slimline rack in which the rack slot number
matches the slot number configured on the card.
NOTE: For a VM600 slimline rack (ABE056), the slot number coding range is 0to12.
The factory assigned default values for slot number coding are as follows:
•Slot=03 (0011 binary) for a slimline rack configured for use by a
VM600system such as a MPC4 and IOC4T.
For example, a VM600MPSx/MPC4/IOC4T system typically uses slot03 in a VM600
slimline rack, which requires that the rack’s DIP switch is set to 03. (This is because the
VM600MPSx configuration software uses 03 as the default slot number, although other slot
numbers can be used.)
NOTE: It is important to note that for a VM600MPSx/MPC4/IOC4T system in a VM600
slimline rack, the VM600MPS configuration typically uses rack slot 03.
When a card that implement this electronic keying mechanism is to be installed in a VM600
slimline rack (ABE056), micro-switches on the backplane of the slimline rack must be
configured to match the slot number configured for the card (Figure2-5). This allows a card
to be used in a slimline rack without reconfiguring its slot number.
