SEL-5056

Network Management System (NMS)

The SEL-5056 NMS provides a single controller for system-level network configuration, management, and telemetry monitoring for critical infrastructure.

The SEL-5056 NMS simplifies software-defined networking (SDN)-enabled switch provisioning by automatically configuring networks using network drawings, IEC 61850 Substation Configuration Description (SCD) files, and SEL Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) connection services files.

It works collectively with SEL operational technology (OT) SDN switches to provide a complete deny-by-default engineering solution for Ethernet-based LANs.

Traffic engineering with the SEL-5056 NMS simplifies end-to-end provisioning and offers the ability to proactively design fault-tolerant networks, resulting in greater performance, improved reliability, and highly deterministic packet delivery.

With the SEL-5056 NMS, you can manage multiple networks and centrally manage network changes from a single, modern interface streamlined for effortless navigation and enhanced situational awareness and control.

Running as a Microsoft Windows service or as an embedded application on the SEL Blueframe platform, the SEL-5056 makes scaling to large networks easy and efficient.

Configure Applications and Endpoints

Define and deploy host communication profiles using applications and application endpoints. This allows you to utilize common network designs and services for multiple networks and to manage your network functions uniformly and efficiently.

Expanded feature

Simplify Network Engineering

Eliminate repetitive network engineering tasks by using your Microsoft Visio network drawings, IEC 61850 files, or RTAC files to automatically provision your network. Save time, reduce the chance of input errors, and ensure alignment between relay and network communications settings while validating drawing accuracy.

Easily Navigate the Modernized Topology Space

Quickly navigate and perform network changes using a feature-rich user interface that helps you understand your actions within the context of the larger system. Streamlined information management connects workflow steps and clearly highlights statuses, easing your analytical workload.

Manage Multiple Networks Simultaneously

Design the system architecture that best fits your facilities and procedures. Simplify complex environments and improve network scalability with centralized management across networks while maintaining precise control over individual communications circuits.

Create Stronger Network Security

Define exactly what can occur on your network with a deny-by-default architecture. Provision circuits using network access control that extends from Layer 1 through Layer 4 of the packet, giving you context-aware control of conversations between devices. SDN makes systems more cybersecure by eliminating attack-prone networking features, like flood to learn, an unsecure control plane, and broadcast domains.

Improve Failover Performance

Proactively traffic-engineer your network, bringing more precision and predictability to critical infrastructure networks and improving failover times to less than 1 ms to support even the most demanding real-time control signals.

Streamline NERC CIP Data Collection

Use the SEL-5056 NMS to automate reporting for NERC CIP-007-6 Cyber Security—Systems Security Management, R1 Ports and Services, Part 1.1.

Expanded feature

Reduce Downtime for Configuration

Configure the SEL-5056 NMS in the field with connected devices or offline in a lab. With 100 percent offline design, configuration, testing, validation, and baselining capabilities, the SEL-5056 streamlines deployment and minimizes field installation downtime.

Manage Network Scalability and Change Management

Manage all network changes without affecting existing services and applications. All network additions and changes can be configured centrally and pushed out to configure the network of SEL OT SDN Ethernet switches.

Programmatically Test and Validate Your Network

Reduce deployment timelines and eliminate guesswork in the testing scope by knowing exactly what communications circuits your network is configured to support and that all other conversations will be dropped with deny-by-default network access control. This results in a defined test scope and predictable and consistent network validation. You can have confidence your network will perform exactly how you engineered it for as long as it is in service.
