Hirschmann SPIDER 4TX/1FX-ST EEC Industrial Ethernet Switch

The Hirschmann SPIDER 4TX/1FX-ST EEC (Belden Part Number: 943 892-001) is an entry-level, highly durable unmanaged industrial Ethernet switch. Designed specifically for cost-sensitive yet physically demanding applications, this compact switch serves as an efficient “plug-and-play” media converter and port expander for localized industrial networks.

Product Introduction / Overview

The SPIDER 4TX/1FX-ST EEC is a five-port unmanaged switch that provides an immediate, zero-configuration solution for mixing copper and fiber infrastructure. Outfitted with 4 Fast Ethernet RJ45 ports and 1 Multi-Mode ST fiber-optic port, it facilitates long-distance connection backbones up to 5 km while offering local device drop points.

As an EEC (Extended Environmental Conditions) certified model, it features an upgraded internal component board and thermal management design. This enables reliable operation in extreme temperatures, making it a perfect fit for wind turbines, roadside cabinets, and outdoor manufacturing yards.

Product Features / Core Advantages

Ultra-Compact Profile: Measuring just 25 mm wide, it minimizes cabinet space requirements, easily slipping into dense, pre-existing DIN-rail arrays.

EEC Hardening: Supports operational security in non-climate-controlled spaces, preventing thermal shutdowns or drift in extreme winter or peak summer conditions.

True Plug-and-Play: Requires absolutely no IP configuration, software, or management setup. It operates instantly upon receiving power and physical cables.

High-Speed Store-and-Forward: Features hardware-based packet filtering and forwarding mechanisms to prevent collision propagation across the localized segment.

Model Classification (The SPIDER Family)

Hirschmann’s unmanaged lineup utilizes a functional nomenclature to define port layouts and structural attributes:

SPIDER – 4TX / 1FX – ST – EEC

Series Copper Fiber Fiber Extended Temp

Name Ports Ports Type (-40 to +70°C)

SPIDER: Baseline unmanaged, compact DIN-rail switch family.

4TX: Includes 4 twisted-pair copper RJ45 ports.

1FX: Includes 1 Fast Ethernet fiber-optic port.

ST: Utilizes bayonet-style ST fiber connectors (alternative models use thread-on SC connectors).

EEC: Extended Environmental Conditions (Standard SPIDER models only run from $0^\circ\text{C}$ to $+60^\circ\text{C}$).

Environmental Tolerance Conditions

Operating Temperature: $-40^\circ\text{C}$ to $+70^\circ\text{C}$ ($-40^\circ\text{F}$ to $158^\circ\text{F}$)

Storage/Transport Temp: $-40^\circ\text{C}$ to $+85^\circ\text{C}$

Relative Humidity: 10% to 95% (non-condensing)

Vibration Resistance: IEC 60068-2-6 standard compliant (designed for moving machinery mounts)

Shock Resistance: IEC 60068-2-27 standard compliant

Installation Method

[DIN Rail Hook Mechanism]

||

\/

|===| <– Place upper lip over rail top

| |

| S | <– Press lower body firmly forward

| |

|===| <– Plastic spring tab snaps under rail bottom

DIN Rail Snapping: Lean the top hook of the integrated DIN-rail clip located on the back of the SPIDER switch over the top edge of a standard 35mm DIN-rail. Slide the switch downward slightly, then push the lower half of the switch toward the rail until the internal spring tab snaps shut.

Cabling Routing: Ensure there is at least 25 mm of free space above and below the switch housing to allow natural air convection cooling.

Safety Grounding: Connect your system protective earth line to the ground contact located directly on the power supply terminal block.

Operating Instructions

1. Power Connection

The switch utilizes a removable 3-pin terminal block on its top surface.

Wire your positive DC lead ($+24\text{ V}$) to the terminal marked +.

Wire your ground return lead to the terminal marked -.

Connect the shielding/protective earth line to the terminal marked with the Ground symbol. Tighten the terminal screws to a torque of $0.5\ \text{N}\cdot\text{m}$.

2. Port Connections & Link Verification

RJ45 Ports: Plug in shielded Cat5/Cat5e patch cables. Because the ports support Auto-MDI/MDIX, you can use either straight-through or crossover cables to link to PLCs, HMIs, or upstream switches.

ST Fiber Port: Remove the protective black dust caps from the ST sockets. Connect the Tx (transmit) line to the Rx (receive) of the partner device, and the Rx line to the partner’s Tx line.

LED Status Check: Verify that the top power LED (P) is solid green. Upon connecting active cables, the corresponding port link LEDs (L/D) should light up or flash to indicate active data transfer.
