ABB Feeder Protection and Control REF615 Product Guide

RE615
1. Description
REF615 is a dedicated feeder protection and control relay, designed for use in utility substations and industrial power systems
Protection, control, measurement and supervision, including radial, loop and mesh distribution networks with or without distributed generation. REF615 is a member of ABB’s Relion® product line and also part of its 615 protection and control product line. The 615 series relays feature a compact structure and adopt a withdrawable unit design.
The 615 series has been redesigned from the ground up to unlock the full potential of the IEC 61850 standard in terms of communication and interoperability among substation automation equipment. Relays provide primary protection for overhead lines and cable feeders in distribution networks. Relays are also used as backup protection in applications that require independent redundant protection systems. According to the selected standard configuration, the relay is suitable for protecting isolated neutral lines, resistance grounding, compensation and overhead lines and cable feeders in firmly grounded networks. Once the standard configuration relay is assigned application-specific Settings, it can be directly put into use. The 615 series relay supports a range of communication protocols, including IEC 61850 and 2nd edition support, and the process complies with IEC 61850-9-2 LE and IEC 60870-5-103 buses. The Modbus® and DNP3.Profibus DPV1 communication protocols are supported by the protocol converter SPA-ZC 302.
2. Standard configuration
The REF615 has 12 alternative standard configurations. The standard signal configuration can be changed through the signal matrix or graph to protect and control the application function of the simple explosive device PCM600. Furthermore, the application configuration of the PCM600’s functionality supports the creation of multiple layers of logical functions and flip-flops that use various logical elements, including timers. By integrating the protection function with the logic function block, the relay configuration can be adjusted according to the specific application requirements of the user. The relay is described by default in the function diagram with binary input when leaving the factory, including binary output, function-to-function connection and alarm LED. Some functions supported in REF615 application configuration tools must be added, which can be found in the Signal Matrix tool and relays. 3. Protection function
Relays provide directional and non-directional overcurrent and thermal overload protection, as well as directional and non-directional ground fault protection. Some standard configurations allow for the use of ground fault protection based on admittance, harmonics or watts as options in addition to directional ground fault protection. In addition, this relay also features sensitive ground fault protection, phase discontinuity protection, transient/intermittent ground fault protection, overvoltage and undervoltage protection, residual overvoltage protection, positive sequence undervoltage and negative sequence overvoltage protection. Frequency protection, including overfrequency, underfrequency and frequency change rate protection, is provided in relays with standard configurations of H, J, K, L and N. This relay also integrates an optional three-pole multi-stage automatic reclosing function for overhead line feeders. The standard configurations L and N also offer ground fault protection based on multi-frequency admittance, providing selective directional ground fault protection for high-impedance ground networks. This work is based on multi-frequency neutral admittance measurements using the fundamental frequency and harmonic components in Uo and Io. Special filtering algorithms can achieve reliable and safe fault directions during intermittent/heavy strike ground faults. It provides a very good combination of single-function reliability and sensitivity protection for low-ohm and high-ohm ground faults as well as transient and intermittent or heavy strike ground faults. This relay has been enhanced with optional hardware and software and also features three light detection channels for arc fault protection of circuit breakers, busbars and cable rooms in metal-enclosed indoor switchgear. The arc fault protection sensor interface can be used on the optional communication module. Rapid tripping enhances personnel safety and limits material damage in the event of arc faults. Binary input and output modules can be selected as options – featuring three high-speed binary outputs (HSO), which further reduces the total operating time compared to normal power output, typically by 4… 6 milliseconds
