Stucke Elektronik SYMAP®BC protection device

SYMAP® BC (Bus-tie Control) is a specialized digital protection and control device from Stucke Elektronik,

specifically designed for Bus-tie Breakers (the breakers that connect different sections of a busbar).

In complex power systems, especially those with redundant architectures, the BC model ensures that power is distributed safely and reliably across multiple segments.

1. Product Description

SYMAP® BC serves as the intelligent controller for bus-couplers and bus-sectionalisers. Its primary job is to manage the “link” between two independent power buses.

It prevents out-of-phase paralleling by using integrated synchronization logic and protects the busbar from faults by utilizing high-speed directional or non-directional protection.

In a “split-bus” configuration (common in DP2/DP3 ships), the SYMAP® BC is the critical component that decides when it is safe to join two live power systems and when they must be isolated to prevent a total blackout.

2. Technical Parameter Table

Category Specification
Power Supply 24V DC (Standard) or 110V/230V AC/DC (Optional)
Voltage Inputs Dual 3-phase inputs (Busbar A and Busbar B for synchronization)
Current Inputs 3-phase current monitoring for directional/non-directional protection
Synchronization Built-in Auto-Synchronizer (check-sync) for phase, voltage, and frequency
Protection Functions Overcurrent (50/51), Directional Overcurrent (67), Under/Over Voltage (27/59), Under/Over Frequency (81)
Logic Control Customizable PLC for complex interlocking (e.g., prevent closing if G1 is on Bus A)
Communication Modbus RTU/TCP, Profibus DP, CANopen, IEC 61850
Sampling Rate High-speed processing (< 40ms trip time)
Event Storage 5,000 events + Disturbance recording for fault analysis

3. Related Models

The BC series is adapted based on the complexity of the switchboard:

SYMAP® BC-Standard: Basic bus-tie control with synchronization and overcurrent protection.

SYMAP® BC-Dir: Enhanced version with Directional Overcurrent Protection, vital for identifying which side of the bus-tie has the fault.

SYMAP® BC-Compact: A space-saving version for smaller industrial switchgear.

SYMAP® BC-HV: Designed for medium and high-voltage busbar systems.

4. Application Cases

Marine Power Systems (DP-Ships): In Dynamically Positioned vessels, the BC manages the connection between engine rooms to ensure redundant power supply while preventing fault propagation.

Data Centers: Controlling the coupling between different UPS-backed bus segments to maintain “Tier 4” availability.

Hospitals: Managing the transition between utility power and emergency generator busbars.

Industrial Microgrids: Integrating renewable energy busbars with the main factory distribution bus.

5. Product Advantages and Features

Integrated Synchronizer: Eliminates the need for a separate external “Check-Sync” relay, reducing wiring and panel space.

Fault Isolation (Selectivity): Advanced directional logic ensures that the bus-tie only opens when necessary, keeping the healthy part of the grid alive.

Interlocking Logic: Built-in “Boolean” logic prevents dangerous operations, such as paralleling two unsynchronized sources or closing onto a dead-short.

Dual Bus Monitoring: Unlike standard relays, the BC is designed to “look” at both sides of the breaker simultaneously.

High Reliability: Uses the signature Stucke 3-CPU hardware architecture, ensuring that the protection logic remains functional even if the display or communication fails.

6. Other Models in the Same Series

Stucke Elektronik offers a unified ecosystem for the entire power plant:

SYMAP® G / ECG: Generator Protection and Engine Control.

SYMAP® F: Feeder Protection for outgoing lines.

SYMAP® T: Transformer Protection.

SYMAP® M / Y: Motor and Pump protection.

SYMAP® LD: Line Differential protection for cable links.
